Harlem-born and classically trained, Sandi Russell was an international jazz singer, writer and educator. Of Native American, African American, and European descent, she lived half her life in the United States and half in the United Kingdom where, as an author and performer, she became a leading
interpreter of African American culture.

This beautiful book, published in 2019, offers an intimate and multi-faceted portrait of an exceptional artist and much-loved woman who, through her music, writings, teaching and friendships, moved and inspired many others.

More than thirty contributors to Sandi Russell: a Celebration, from both sides of the Atlantic, include friends from childhood, fellow musicians, artists, poets and critics. Also gathered here are Sandi’s key essays, interviews and reviews, including her encounters with such luminaries as Maya Angelou and Toni Morrison, and her own previously unpublished poems and song lyrics.

Sandi Russell: a Celebration is a high quality paperback, fully documented, and illustrated with archive images, original artworks, and over one hundred photographs, many in full colour.

Her Legacy goes on…..

While living in Durham, Sandi was a voice tutor for the university’s music school, initiated the city’s jazz festival, and published a novel, Color (2013), set in Tidewater County, Virginia. 

Sandi’s was a life lived for music, language, integrity, humanity and for enriching the lives of others. St Chad’s College is therefore proud to offer this scholarship in her memory to an undergraduate student of global majority heritage to enable their full participation and enjoyment in College life at St Chad’s.
